National Wildland Urban Interface Taskforce

Rapid Deployment, Heavy Duty Firefighting

Each summer we continue to see hundreds of homes and businesses destroyed by wildfire. As the number of homes built in wildland settings continues to increase, many fire professionals are of the opinion that this problem can only get worse.

What Is The Urban Interface Taskforce?

Several private wildland firefighting cooperators have joined forces to develop a National Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Taskforce. This unique package of equipment allows fire managers to order up an entire structure protection group of firefighters and equipment. Familiarity with each other and their equipment frees these firefighters to do what they do best - fight fire.

The Green Knoll Fire

In 2001, an Urban Interface Task Force was deployed in Wyoming during the Green Knoll Fire near Jackson. This historic event did not go un-noticed by the American Fire Service, the Press, or the Citizens of Jackson. Using resources from five states, private contractors deployed with government agencies and stopped what was sure to have been a disastrous loss of property.

The Black Mountain II

In 2003, our Urban Interface Task Force was mobilized in Missoula, Montana. We utilized our CAFS systems as the fire blew through a subdivision in advance of the coming firestorm. This is another case of public and private entities working together to provide Wildland Urban Interface protection.

Another tool in the Toolbox

While there are numerous issues that need to be addressed in the mitigation of an unprecedented and at-times catastrophic hazard in the WUI, the National Urban Interface Task Force is the latest tool to fight this battle.
